Overview

BLACK FEMMES ARE LEADING CONTEMPORARY MUSIC!

Continuing the celebration of Black creativity in music, The Broad and RCA partner on a special night featuring Flo Milli, Fousheé, and METTE. Enjoy an intimate live set on the East West Bank Plaza by Flo Milli. Hailing from Alabama, the rapper swiftly rose from viral TikTok sensation in 2018 to Platinum Certification, which is a testimony to both her talent and tenacity. Named Best New Artist at the BET Awards in 2020, Flo Milli continues to be an innovator in the field. Also on the bill for this special evening under the stars is Fousheé, whose genre-bending repertoire melds alt rock and soul, and METTE, an artist unrestricted by the need to align with one genre who finds her sound at the crossroads of dance music and a myriad of possibilities. These artists embody powerful, positive depictions of Black women found in The Broad’s special exhibition, Mickalene Thomas: All About Love

“We’re thrilled to work with The Broad on this special artist event in celebration of the incredible work of Mickalene Thomas. We believe deeply in the intersection of art and music and our participating artists, Flo Milli, Fousheé and METTE are true creatives, visionaries, songwriters, and performers. We look forward to a continued partnership with the fantastic team of curators at The Broad as we work together to bring art & music to life in new and innovative ways.”

Biographies

Flo Milli

Flo Milli

With nearly 1 billion streams to date, 24-year-old, Alabama-born rapper Flo Milli has taken the world by storm in her rapid ascent. Milli released her first official track, “Beef FloMix,” on her SoundCloud in late 2018. She had gone viral by early 2019 on TikTok, marking her breakout success - and she hasn’t let up since. Releasing tracks and visuals throughout 2019, she followed up with “In The Party,” which has been streamed and viewed nearly 200 million times worldwide. Known for her bubbly delivery and aggressive bars, in July 2020 she took the internet by storm once again with the release of her debut mixtape, Ho, why is you here? Adding to her accolades, she was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2021 BET Awards and Best Breakthrough Song at the MTV VMAs for her feature on Baby Tate’s “I Am.” She released her debut album, You Still Here, Ho?, in July 2022 via RCA Records where creatively she paid homage to major pop culture moments with each visual. To coincide with the release, she made her TV debut at MTV VMAs on the Extended Play Stage presented by Doritos, multiple appearances at New York Fashion Week, and a debut headlining tour in partnership with Monster Energy Outbreak. She followed up with a deluxe of the release in 2023, coupled with her first-ever Coachella set, where she partnered with Pucci for custom outfits throughout the weekend. Milli has had other major partnerships with brands, including Google Pixel, American Express, 7Eleven, NYX Cosmetics, and many more. Her current single, “Never Lose Me,” is RIAA Certified Platinum, in the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and most recently was number 1 on Billboard’s TikTok Top 50 for multiple consecutive weeks. She made her late-night television debut performing the track just last month on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She has since released versions of the track with Lil Yachty, Bryson Tiller, SZA, and Cardi B. 2024 is looking to be an exciting year for the artist, with her new album Fine Ho, Stay, out now and she’ll soon be joining Gunna as a special guest on his Bittersweet North American tour. Keep an eye out for more from Flo Milli soon!

Fousheé

Fousheé

Fousheé is easy to call a “multi-hyphenate” but just when you think you have a grasp of her, you don’t. The genres blur: alt, folk, rock, R&B; the collaborators extend: Lil Wayne, Steve Lacy, Uzi, Yachty; the accolades continue: Pitchfork, GQ, W Magazine, Rolling Stone, Flaunt, V Magazine, Okayplayer. Fou effortlessly shares stages on the most high-profile tours — opening for James Blake and touring with friend and collaborator Steve Lacy, with whom she co-penned the 2022 breakout and recently Grammy-nominated song, Lacy’s “Bad Habit.” And while Fousheé refuses to be pinned down, the art blooms. Her last project, softCORE, was no exception. Refusing to walk the establishment line of what a female artist is “supposed” to do, worse yet, to be, she weaves punk and rage into the sweet folk tapestry that catapulted her to half a billion streams. softCORE is a punk record in the most pointed sense of the word. Stepping outside of the expectations of what listeners heard from her previously, softCORE remains purely peerless. The album is a true melting pot of influences, genres, and sounds, all anchored by Fousheé’s incredible voice and impeccable songwriting, both of which imprinted even the angriest songs with hooks for days. Multiple listens bring up other sonic trailblazers like Le Tigre, The Runaways, Kelis, Atari Teenage Riot, 100 Gecs, Gwen Stefani, and Lil Uzi Vert, who guests on the song “spend the money.”  On softCORE, the camera boldly swings from romantic, 4AD guitar tones to rapid-fire beats to intensely screamed declarations to classic R&B balladry, but it all works seamlessly. Simply put, it sounds like the future.

METTE

METTE

The Minnesota native initially exploded onto the pop cultural landscape as the fearless star in N.E.R.D and Rihanna’s “Lemon” video and was a long-standing member of Pharrell’s dance squad, The Baes. METTE also starred alongside J-Lo in the film Hustlers and more recently played "Video Girl Barbie" in the box office record-breaking, star-studded cast of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. If that wasn’t enough, she also partnered with Alexander McQueen for the Sprint Runner and SS23 campaigns, by Grammy Award-winning directors Sophie Muller and Jonas Åkerlund, respectively. METTE released her critically acclaimed debut EP METTENARRATIVE in September of last year, which included singles “VAN GOGH,” “FOR THE PEOPLE,” and “MAMA’S EYES.” 2023, overall, was a standout year for METTE who consistently pushed boundaries and garnered widespread acclaim. Towards the end of 2023, METTE performed at the British Fashion Awards (often hailed as the UK’s Met Gala), where her magnetic presence and musical prowess took center stage. Not stopping there, METTE captivated audiences on Jools Holland, supported Jessie Ware on her UK tour, and performed a mesmerizing session on BBC Radio 1’s Future Pop. She’s also been named as Spotify’s Pop Rising Artists To Watch for 2024. METTE continues to cement her position as one of the most exciting artists to watch in 2024 having garnered key tastemaker support from BBC Radio 1, Clara Amfo, Greg James, Vogue, The Face, NME, Clash, ELLE, i-D, Dazed, DIY, DORK, The Line of Best Fit, The Fader, PEOPLE, WhoWhatWear, The Guardian, and more. In addition to this, 2023 saw METTE grace the covers of Notion, BEAT, Hunger, L’OFFICIEL HK, Wonderland, and METAL, further solidifying her status as a cultural icon.
