About This Artwork
Urs Fischer’s career has been marked by irreverent interventions inside art and civic institutions as well as by an open approach to materials, using any medium that best suits his wildly inventive purposes. In Untitled Fischer presents a lamppost that is at once functional (the lightbulbs indeed glow) and warped, in an off-kilter take on reality. Bending much like a candle might under the heat of its flame, the sculpture looks as if it is melting, an unlikely fate for its cast-aluminum form. Untitled takes up a theme that surfaces in much of Fischer’s work: questioning the binary concepts of transience and permanence.
